Machula (Ancestors) Offerings

In the Andean philosophy, there is no death. There is only transformation as our energy changes. It is still possible to communicate with the deceased. Another Andean belief is that when our ancestors die, they (we) return to the star in the sky that we came from.

It is important to respect and honour their memories to preserve our relationship with them.

Sometimes a person has done harm in their life and hasn’t apologized or made amends before their death. When this happens, they create Hucha (heavy energy) that can affect their families, the community and those they harmed.

As well, our grandparents or great-grandparents who may have suffered through wartime, depression and famine, can pass down their hucha.

Cleansings and offerings are a way to clear that energy.

Offerings (such as despachos) are made to rectify wrongdoings and to help restore balance. They are a bridge to communicate with the spirits, to build a relationship with the Universe and to bring back cosmic order. It’s also a delicious meal for the spirits!

*Please note: a two-month waiting period is required before offering a blessing to respect the death process and timeline.
